it's a week or so to the real thing, so yeah .

Someone once said, "Success is when those who know you the best are those who love you the most."

Years ago a man named Jahari developed a self-assessment tool that helps us understand how we relate to others. The Jahari Window helps us realize where we are in our ability to know who we are and for others to know who we are. Real transparency in communication takes place when those we associate with us know who we are after we discover who we really are. See if you can identify what category you might fall among these four:

Transparent Life The transparent life is the life we should desire. I know who I am and others know me. There is nothing hidden. I have come to know who I am as an individual and basically people get what they see in me.

Bull-In-The-China Shop This person is blinded to the things that others recognize about him. The solution to becoming a transparent person is to get feedback from those around us about the blind spots in our personality. We must ask for the feedback and be willing to respond to their input.

Aloof/Hidden Secrets This person lives in a secret world. They don't allow others to know about themselves. They know themselves but are fearful of letting others know. Those around them do not know them either. What do others really know about you? Have you allowed yourself to get close enough to others to share who you really are inside?

Hidden Potential This is a combination of Bull-In-A-China Shop and Aloof/Hidden Secrets. It is the saddest of all conditions. These people don't know themselves and others don't know them either. This means both parties have to invest the energy to communicate and get feedback from one another.

How about you? Why not take a step to find out who you really are in the eyes of others. It could change your life.

I find this article very interesting and I hope those reading it will know more about yourself and allowing others to know you more. SCB is a family and it is made up of different people with different background and if you belong to this family, you wouldn't find yourself not knowing the people in the family. Indeed to get to know all may take time and relationship needs time to build.

I hope with the investiture of the new batch of councillors, you will build your relationship well with your seniors and learn from one another. Stay strong and finish this race of yours as a student councillor well!

Cyber Etiquette

It has been a while since the blog was updated. As we enter into the new year, i think it will be good if we can have a re cap of what we have learnt so far. I have taught on many things, one of them is on cyber etiquette.

Writing blog, MSN, friendster, live journal, face book, etc are platforms where people get connected in the cyber world. Long lost friends get united through the platform of friendster and now the popular face book. I am not really good with all these cyber space tools, but what i know is that when we use these tools, we need to practice the value of respect.

There have been news articles on people abusing the use of blogging, and the different tools in the cyber world. That is why we need to practise cyber etiquette. People write on blog to express their feelings, some may even use it to ventilate their frustrations, anger at times, some will use it to share the happy moments with friends, some use it as an update on what is going on in their lives. These are actually good platforms for people who cannot express freely but choose to express in writing. Some are good writers who use this as a platform to display their writing talents.

However i am rather concerned when it comes to people who simply abuse it and allowing negative things to appear on their blog, msn nick,etc. Negative things such as vulgarities, words that tear down people, some even use images like video clips, pictures to hurt. These are not the kind of cyber etiquette we want to see it appearing in the cyber space, and yet there are many who are abusing the freedom that was given.

For these people who use words that is offensive, abusive, hurting, tearing down, it just reflected to people who you really are in person. Even in the cyber world, names may be changed, but it doesn't change who you are in person.

Character is who you are when no one is watching.

Let us all respect one another and watch our cyber etiquette.

Servant Leadership

The washing of one another's feet is an act of loving dedication to one another, who is also a representative of all humanity, of our willingness to do for that one whatever may be necessary, even to the point of death. When we take the feet of our brother or sister in our hands and wash them, we are saying to him or her, "I love you as a brother or sister, and you can count on me to be of service to you, however humble it may be, even to the point of giving my life for you." Unless one enters into it in this spirit, prepared to make this commitment, it cannot be said that one has truly taken part in the service and has "washed one another's feet."

Do you really know the meaning of servant leadership?

Publicity talk

For the past 2 weeks or so, we have been visiting primary schools to give publicity talk. This time round the student councillors had more exposure compared to previous years. They had the opportunity to plan the deployment (choosing the PSC or councillors who were formally from the primary school that we were visiting), take up the QnA segment where they were able to engage the audience through some simple questions. And they were even sharing their learning experience in CVSS as well as how the leadership role they play has helped in their personal development as a young leader of the nation.

This whole task needs good planning of people and resources, besides it, good management skills and also public speaking skills. It also serves as an exposure for the young ones to face a crowd of 200-400 audience. It is not an easytask and i can see that all of them are trying their best. Well, hope to see a team of confident speakers from the council board taking the different platforms in school. This also serves as a platform for the student population to know you better and show them that you can be a role model in all aspect, including taking the mic and speak to an audience of 1500. How many can have the chance to do it, and how many can do it well? So for those who are given the chance to go up to the platform and speak, you need to brush up your skills; one way is to watch leaders' speech from different area, the conference you get to attend, and most important of all, is to practise and practise!

You need to watch your posture, your eye contact, your tone, your speed, and speak with clarity. You must know what you are talking about, internalise your materials or notes and go through it again and again in your mind. Little pieces of notes serve as standby purpose, just in case you need to refer but as a speaker on the platform, you must be clear of what you want to talk about!

Well, hope to see improvement for most of you next year!

Well done to these who have attained NYAA bronze and our school was given the honour to choose one of our award recipients to give a speech to the over 100s of award recipients from all over Singapore! Indeed this is a priviledge and honour to represent so many bronze award recipients from all over Singapore to share her journey and thoughts. And yes, Angelina Bok is the chosen one! She gave her speech in front of so many people and i know it will be a memorable experience for her. Bravo for her!

Indeed this is a demonstration of our values - commitment and confidence. When she knew that she needed to prepare a speech, i am sure she has worked really hard to craft out the speech, and even seeked help from Mrs Fiona Tan to help vett her script. It shows how committed she is towards the assignment she was given. The fact that she was able to stand in front of so many people to give a speech, it's a demonstration of her confidence. I am sure those who were there at the ceremony would testify that she was really calm and steady in delivering her speech.

Not forgetting the rest of the recipients, indeed, the NYAA award is one of the highest achievements one can attain. It is a national award and we are proud of these who have completed their NYAA bronze within half a year. Not only it is a national award that is recognised by many organizations, as a student, it gives you leadership points as well , on top of the leadership points you get from your post as a student councillor. In addition, it will be reflected in your testimonial too.

I hope to see more of you getting this award, not because of the award itself , but it is a personal achievement as a young leader of the next generation.

Student Leaders' Adventure Trip, Pahang

It was a saturday evening when 27 student leaders and 3 teachers assembled at the Tanjong Pagar Train Station, getting ready to go for an adventurous trip in Pahang. The teachers have decided to take the train ride instead of the normal coach ride, hoping to create a different experience for the students. This is the second time i took this train to Malaysia and i am very sure to many of them, it was a different experience after all. Look at how excited they are, some of them had observations and found out new things that they do not know...do you notice anything?

Lesson No 1

Be observant, there are many things around you that you may not have noticed before. If you are observant enough, you will find out things that you may not have learnt before or things that are not found in your textbook. So have you found out anything from the pictures?

Yes, the immigration counter has malay words first instead of the usual english words. Did you realise that the sequence of our entrance to Malaysia?

There are many learning points for us during the trip to Pahang. Many will be coming up soon...

stock check for your leadership development

Please take some time to have a "stock check" for yourself. We are coming to the end of the year, though another hectic period is coming up for councillors soon, i would like to have all of you doing some reflection for yourself.

Why Reflect?

We build up understanding through our experience in the world. But until we reflect – that is, until we engage in explaining not just what we do, but why we do what we do – this understanding remains just “intuitive”:something we feel in our gut and can do almost on auto-pilot.

The process of reflection helps us to develop our understanding more deeply and to make our intuitive knowledge shareable with others. It provides the opportunity to step back and take a look at what our work means to us and our communities.

We reflect on our work, so that we can recognize our own intuitive understandings, develop them further, and explore new directions.

Ask questions to understand experiences that you may have overlooked in your day-to-day work. By reflecting we can grow and develop our understanding more deeply, so that our work continues to improve the next time we roll through the design process.

Hope you guys understand why we are practising this.

Well, here are some guiding points for you to ponder :

1) our goal is to have a value based student leadership development for our students so that they can contribute to school and society, since it's value based, you can think along this.
- how have you been developed and that you display the values that the teachers have inculcate in you. Have you been a good role model of the 4 values to your peers?
-what are the opportunities given to you to train you for student leadership?
-how have you improved so far? does the reflection after the event and evaluation given by the teachers help you in the development for leadership skills?

2) what are the platforms that you get to develop and display your leadership qualities? Workshops you have attended?

3) did teacher give you constant feedback?

4) what are the trainings given to you so far ? during full board meeting? Workshops, conference, etc.

5) what are the leadership skills you have learnt so far? Eg, communication skills, decision making, organizational skills, etc. have you applied them and where have you applied them?

After reflecting, what is next? What do you intend to do with all these skills learnt? How can you apply in your life? how do you think you can be an effective leader in the school?

A unreflected life is not worth living.

Start living your life intentionally! Do you want to create a positive influence over someone? Have you live a life that has left a positive impact to your peers?

To those who are going for the trip, we will be having a briefing soon. But in case you need to go look for things during the weekend, here is a checklist for all first.

PRE TRIP PREPARATION
Clothing : Light, comfortable cotton wear, or state-of-the-art quick-drying clothes. Casual wear for most occasions during travel and during most activities. Shorts and T-shirts are good around camps, whereas long pants are highlyrecommended if you have the tendency to attract mosquitoes. Longs are essential for abseiling! Wearing them will protect you from cuts & scratches.
Footwear:As this is an overseas adventure trip, you will find yourself trekking through the jungles and into rugged terrain. Proper footwear (i.e. shoes) will protect your feet from being cut by sharp rock edges and bitten by`fire ants’. It will also give better traction and prevent you from slipping down muddy trails. DO NOT bring wellworn shoes that have no more proper gripping traction on the soles, such footwear will not be able to properlysupport you when scrambling over slippery terrain. If your shoes are brand new, do ensure that they are well`broken-in’. However, do not forget, that you will be in an outdoor environment… expect your shoes to get wet and soiled. Spare socks are essential to prevent blisters and will help to cushion your feet. A pair of slippers is good for use around the campsite and proper river sandals are useful for water activities. Throw in a smallbottle of foot or body powder if you can!Equipment: A flashlight is an essential item to pack, along with sufficient NEW batteries and some spare ones. They are a MUST BRING for any outdoor trip and overseas travel. You will need a flashlight for the caving activities and forcamping/trekking expeditions. Bring a headlamp or attach a sling to the hand torch to allow yourself `handsfree’movement during caving and climbing. Sleeping mats and bags are useful for campsites- they providecushioning & warmth for the overnight in the tents. Depending on the number of nights you will spend outdoors, these can be optional items. They are `good to have’ but not a `must have’ – they take up a lot of space in your backpack.
Medication: You must be medically fit to go overseas. If you are cleared to go & must have your daily dosage of medication,you need to bring these along. A basic personal first aid kit should include an assortment of plasters, mildantiseptic cream, cotton swabs and tissues. Insect repellent is essential to prevent bites. If asthmatic, packyour inhaler.
Toiletries: On such outdoor trips, you have to bring your own supply of toiletries... toilet paper included.
Petty Cash: Bring only what you might need to use e.g. buying of souvenir T-shirts, snacks, tipping, etc. Recommendedamount : not more than RM100.

PERSONAL ITEMS CHECKLIST International Passport (validity of 6 mths from date of travel – inside a ziploc) Student Pass and/or blue identity card if you hold a foreign passport Valid Visas where applicable (for Chinese, Indian National, etc)
Type of bag to bring: A bag with two shoulder straps or a soft gym bag for your main luggage. Maybe a smaller bag or a waist pouch to carry personal items & drinking water.Pack all your thing INSIDE your big bag, nothing should be dangling outside your bag – this adds weight and isalso a cause for you to misplace things while traveling from point to point.

No trolley bags please… you are on an OUTDOOR trip

A suitable pair of shoes (& sufficient socks), especially for jungle and cave exploration Sandals or Slippers for evening use around camp A light sweater or jacket Torch light & spare batteries (a headlamp would be handy) Rainwear like a light poncho or wind breaker Ziploc/Trash bags to “water-proof” your belongings and for your soiled clothing/shoes Soft jungle hat or base ball cap for trekking & caving activities Water bottle with a carrier or sling to keep your hands free Sufficient change of clothes: bermudas/shorts (3-4), long pants (2), T-shirts (4), underwear (as required)*Long pants (comfortable & loose) for rock cl imbing Bath towel and basic personal toiletries (powder, toothbrush/paste, toilet paper etc) Insect repellent (NOT the insect repellant patches please) Personal medication – e.g. inhaler, band-aids, medication for insect bites, rashes, etc Some cash in Ringgit – for tips (optional) to guides, souvenir or purchase of snacks Essential contact numbers*Should you be bringing cameras, handphones (to check with teachers) and other expensive electronic devices. Pleasenote that you are wholly responsible for the safe keeping of these items.

STUFF FOR ACTIVITIEs:

Caving – Torch light, spare batteries & proper footwear (there are only so many times we can stress this point) Rafting – Sun block, swim wear, t shirt & shorts. Sandals or sneakers on the feet (NO slippers!) Rock Climbing - Comfortable trekking pants, NOT jeans Camping – Sleeping Bag or Sleeping MatCAMPSITE DOS & DON’TS During all night movement, bring along your torchlight, this is a `MUST’! Dispose all your trash wisely, always make it a point to leave the campsite cleaner than when you first arrived DO NOT wander from the campsite or go exploring on your own without permission – keep away from `off-limit’areas like cliffs, deep pools, etc Footwear is to be kept OUTSIDE of the tents Mosquito coils are not to be lit inside tents or too near the tents, we do not wish to start any fires Keep toilets clean; flush the loo after a pee or poo (flush with the well water) Leave your footwear outside your tents – Zip-up when not in use , insects are attracted to light & body heat Be careful of what you hold onto & use for support whilst walking/trekking Do not blindly grab at branches; be watchful of thorns & insects on these overhanging vines & tree trunks

WATER CAUTION: p e r s o n a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t y d u r i n g r a f t i n g Always wear your Personal Floatation Devices (PFD) whenever in the river (dip/swim) & while rafting PFDs are to be secured properly and tightened correctly Footwear is essential so as to prevent cuts by stones/rocks and/or branches. No slippers!

ABSEIL SITE RULES: a l l a b s e i l g e a r MU S T b e wo r n b e f o r e mo v i n g t o s i t e A – check that all ANCHORS are secure B – check that the BUCKLES on your harness is locked & double backed C – make sure that the CARABINER is locked & checked D – ensure your DESCENDER is correctly hooked up E – last check by your friend that EVERYTHING is in order.

Always move in pairs and LISTEN TO INSTRUCTIONS!

To all councillors including the PSCs

First of all, must give credit to those who have been working hard to maintain this blog, Kalinda, Yi Qing, Karen. Did i miss out anyone?

I can see many of you are working hard for the coming exams, some are seeking consultation from teachers. I hope all of you will put in your best efforts and do your best. It's only1 week before all the papers come in and i want all of you to stay focus. Do not be distracted by things around you, do not let emotions get over you.

Some of you have stated some goals for your coming exam and i hope you will mean what you say.

Zig Ziglar:"It is not your aptitude, but your attitude, that determines your altitude."

Depending on how you look at this quote....i will let you decide for yourself.

Good work habits help develop an internal toughness and self-confident attitude that will sustain you through every adversity and temporary discouragement.

If you have put in a time table for yourself, then follow it through. Overcome any emotions or bad habits like procrastinating. If you feel the anxiety and stress, grab hold of your fellow councillors and share with them. Remember what i have taught, this is a family and no one gets left behind.

I would want to celebrate with all of you for your successes in this coming exams!

All councillors, attention!

Exams is just round the corner and i want to wish all of you all the best and hope all will do well and pass with flying colors !

EXCELLENCE IS WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE~IN ALL THAT WE DO, INCLUDING OUR STUDIES!

So start your revision if you have not done so, and in the midst of your preparation, do watch out your diet. For those who like fast food, KFCs and fried foods, please refrain from eating these for this period. Eat more fruits, vege, drink more water and EXERCISE! Stay focused, no more distractions and just give your very best.

Seek consultation if you need, i am sure teachers would not reject you. I can help those who are weak in Chinese, I will run through with you the format and content for paper 1 on Monday after school. We will meet in G3-01 around 2.30pm. For those who need a place to study and find yourself not able to study at home, you can come and use that as a study area for yourself.

To all Sec2s, if you still remember the target that i have given for all of you, work towards it. Level position less than 40 , 80 and 100. You know who you are.

To all Sec 3s, do well and no F9s, ok:)

To all Sec 1s, if you are reading, well, aim for better grades and work towards it.

To all Sec 4s, if by any chance you are link to this, well, be ready for your Os and Ns, and give your best shot!
